Sandy is going to put together and print maps of where all the rummage sales will be, so that shoppers will know where to go when they are in our neighborhood to shop. City of Flint tree project

Don't forget to join your neighbors on Thursday, June 16th at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall at Calvary United Methodist Church - 2111 Flushing Road to learn about the Street Tree Management Project in the City of Flint. Team members from the Genesee Conservation District will be on hand to discuss their efforts to remove Flint’s most hazardous street trees and crafting a tree re-planting strategy. This is your opportunity to provide input on the location of re-planting efforts and how individuals / groups can be involved in documentation, tree care, etc.

Annual neighborhood picnic - Tuesday, June 21.

The park has been reserved for Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 5:30 pm for our annual neighborhood picnic! The Mott Park Neighborhood Association will provide hot dogs and drinks. Live music will be provided by The Nosmo King band. There will be activities for the children and an opportunity to see neighbors you know well and meet some new ones. So, bring your family, a dish to share, and a lawn chair or two at the soccer field on the corner of Dougherty Place and Nolen Drive for a good time. Rain should not be an issue as we have plenty of canopies to provide cover or shade as needed. We look forward to seeing you there!

Join us Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 9 am - noon for Mott Park neighborhood cleanup day. The weather report is calling for sun and 75 degrees which are perfect conditions for a spring cleanup in the park! We will be raking, painting and planting so bring your rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and brushes. If you can not make it to the park clean up, please take a moment to look on your street to make a difference. This can include cleaning around the sewer drains, mowing an overgrown yard or helping an elderly neighbor plant flowers. These good deeds go along way! There will be pizza and beverages served in Mott Park for all participants at noon. Hope to see you there... Happy Spring!

Mott Park Neighborhood Association meeting

Come join us on Monday, April 11, 2011 from 7 pm - 9 pm at St. John Vianney Church (2415 Bagley Street). The topic of discussion will be neighborhood beautification. We will have literature available on how to create or improve the landscape around your home. Also on the agenda is general neighborhood business and two guest presentations.

The Genesee County Land Bank will be present to tell us about what they are doing in Mott Park. They are rehabing and demolishing some houses, which will help our neighborhood's appearance. The Flint River Watershed Coalition will also be with us, to talk about exciting events that are going on concerning the Flint River's beautification and health. This is important to us because the Flint River runs right through our golf course and along our neighborhood boundaries.

Hello Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to preserve the Mott Park Golf Course. We had an initial meeting last week and shared some good ideas moving forward. Thanks to neighbors Diana and Allan for hosting our group and for the great food.

On Thursday, March 31 at 6:30 pm I have reserved the community room at St John Vianney for our next golf course meeting. Please make note of this on your calendar and pass the word on to anyone that has any interest in preserving the golf course. We would like to have has as many folks in attendance as possible - there is indeed strength in numbers.

I have been trying to gather as much preliminary information as possible from the city administration and other interested parties. The bottom line is that we need to stay committed to keeping Mott operating as a golf course. Any and all ideas need to be on the table. If you would like to e-mail me agenda items or your ideas for the meeting that would be great. Once again, if you know anybody that has an interest please make sure they know about our meeting.

Dear Neighbor,

At the Mott Park Neighborhood meeting a couple weeks back you were kind enough to show interest in getting involved with an initiative to preserve our Mott Park Golf Course. I would like to set up an exploratory meeting in the next couple of weeks with the hope that we can gather all those interested and begin moving forward.

Here's what I am thinking about: Our neighborhood was originally designed around our golf course and park and I feel most agree that having an operating golf course is important to the stability of the neighborhood, the values of our homes, and the general quality of life in our community. It is clear that the City of Flint is in very difficult financial shape and running golf courses is way down their list of priorities. Therefore, as Judge Neithercutt suggested last year, we need to think of other ways to preserve our golf course and parks as neighborhood and community assets.

I would like to gather interested parties and set up an organization to "adopt" Mott Park Golf Course and continue to operate it during the traditional golf season. In my mind all options are on the table and I am open to any and all ideas. The plan I discussed with Judge Neithercutt was to create a non-profit organization to help raise funds and operate the course in a suitable arrangement with the city. Obviously, there are many steps involved with this process but it could turn out to be a very exciting venture with limitless possibilities. There are many logical partners out there that I have already begun to explore and I think we could put together a good coalition.

I recognize that we likely won't have everything in place to open the course as early as April. But I am hoping if we get moving we can work with the city to preserve the space while we are putting our plan together. I will follow-up with a meeting time and place that hopefully you will be able to attend. In the meantime I would love to hear any and all ideas. We need to think outside the box in these challenging times.

I have and will continue to reach out to organizations that could be logical partners like the Flint Junior Golf Association. We also need folks in our community with experience or a passion in specific areas. We could use lawyers, historians, fundraisers, grant-writers, arborists, turf specialists and just folks who would like to help maintain the course. If you know of anyone that might be interested in getting involved in any way, please feel free to forward this e-mail and encourage them to join us.

I do have a strong feeling that the city and administration would work with us, especially with this being an election year.

Benefit dinner - February 13

St. Paul Lutheran School (located at 402 S. Ballenger Hwy., across from McLaren Hospital) will be having their annual School Benefit dinner on Sunday, Febuary 13, 2011 from 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm. The cost is $7.50 for adults, $5.00 for children (6-12 years), $3.00 for children (2-5 years), and under 2 is free. The menu consists of roast beef, roast pork, sauerkraut, coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and homemade pies. They offer dine-in and take-out. The take-out meals are very gererous! All proceeds benefit the school. Last year the school was able to redo the girls bathroom. Holiday walk at the Cultural Center

Flint's winter art fair

The 5th annual First Frost Arts & Fine Crafts Fair will be held at the Flint Institute of Arts on Saturday, November 6 (10 am - 5 pm) and on Sunday, November 7 (11 am - 4 pm). General admission is $5 per person. Seniors 62 & above is $4 and children 12 & under are free. This is a great time to get started on your holiday shopping and to support the local community! Volunteers from Kettering University will be present to remove brush and it will be great to have a group of Mott Park residents helping out! Wheelbarrows are needed. Have you been searching for a local and reputable child care provider? Search no more and meet Jane Zitterkoph of Little Orchard Child Care. Jane began her licensed child care business in 2001 and has been serving the needs of parents and children in the Mott Park area since that time and concentrates on providing a loving and nurturing environment for children. Also important to her is concentrating on individual growth allowing the children to grow with self esteem for themselves and respect for others.

Little Orchard Child Care offers a Tiny Tot and preschool curriculum for ages 2 thru 5. This program runs from September to the end of May; however, the day care is open year around. A five week summer camp program is also provided. As mentioned the day care is open year around Monday thru Friday from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm (earlier hours available upon request). Little Orchard Child Care is also a member of the Michigan Headstart Association and the Association for Child Development.

Jane would also like to share that rates are reasonable, all meals are included and Department of Human Services payments are accepted. Mott Park golf course needs our help!

Hi Everyone,

Our city is in a hard place right now. We are in debt, cuts are being made, but while these changes are happening, our stable neighborhoods are being destabilized, and we don't want this to happen.

One thing that has happened is that the Mott Park Golf Course has been closed and while I understand the mayor's thinking, this golf course sits in the middle of one of Flint's oldest neighborhoods and the golf course has been open since 1923. Mott Park has one of the largest and strongest Neighborhood Association's in the city. It has been a well maintained neighborhood, but with the golf course being closed and the course and greens not being maintained, in a very short time everything will go to seed and this course will never be able to be a golf course again.

Last Thursday, at a City Council Budget Hearing, the Union offered to mow the golf course and maintain the greens for nothing. This would not mean that the golf course would reopen, but that it would be maintained until it could be leased out. But even with this offer by the Union, Mayor Walling says No, that the golf course can not be mowed. Our city is in enough trouble as it is. We still need jobs, police officers have been lost and we in danger of losing more. Why destabilize one of our oldest and strongest neighborhoods?

Please call Mayor Walling whether you live in Mott Park or not, or whether you live in Flint or not, and ask him to allow the city to mow the golf course, at no cost to us. The phone number is 237-2026. We have no other option. We have tried everything else. The greens will probably go to seed this week, and once that happens, the golf course will never be able to be a golf course again.

So please, make your call to Mayor Walling. Ask him to allow Mott Park Golf Course to be mowed this week - 237-2026.

Mott Park clean up

Please join the Mott Park Neighborhood Association along with Kettering University and other community groups to refresh and revitalize Mott Park on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 9 am - 2 pm. Plans are to remove debris, repair the park’s tennis courts and to prepare the park’s flowerbeds for the growing season. Activities will include children games, an egg hunt and a free picnic lunch. Please feel free to bring rakes, mowers, clippers and other equipment that can be used to help beautify our park! In case of rain, the clean up will be postponed to Saturday, May 8, 2010. Residents and non-residents are encouraged to attend.

Citywide neighborhood action session

Come join your Mott Park neighbors at the final neighborhood action session on Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm at Ballenger Field House (Mott Community College). The purpose of the summit is to inform residents of the priorities that were identified during Neighborhood Action Phases I and II where more than 300 action items were developed. Mayor Walling and his staff will outline the plan for implementing the action items and discuss how these items will help guide the deployment of limited city resources.

Bring your recycling down to the park at the corner of Frank Street and Dougherty Place on the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Thank you to all the residents that came out tonight to Mott Park Neighborhood Association's first meeting of 2010. The evening started out with a potluck dinner and the business meeting was conducted soon after. Introductions made by each member of the Executive Committee started the meeting with a brief explanation of each standing committee: Neighborhood Revitalization Committee, Parks and Recreation Committee, Events Committee and Neighborhood Watch Committee. The proposed changes to the by-laws were discussed and voted upon. Further clarification of Section 3.2 was needed and will be voted upon at the next meeting in May. A brief Q & A session was conducted with State Representative Woodrow Stanley, Councilman Sheldon Neeley and City of Flint Police Officers Lipp & Olivo. Commissioner John Northrup also spoke to the audience. Special guests included the President of Flint's Central Park Neighborhood Association and a reporter from East Village Magazine.

As many of you know the city is considering closing the Mott Park golf course indefinitely along with two others. The Mott Park golf course has been a part of our community since 1925 and is vital to the stability of our neighborhood. Councilman Neeley has requested our support and assistance as we explore options to keep this historic golf course open. I have requested background information from our City Parks and Recreation Director, Pat Gerace in order to further understand the situation. In the meantime, we need to develop a neighborhood action plan regarding the future of the golf course. Bottom line is that the stabilization of our neighborhood and potentially the values of our homes relies on keeping the course open. Beat the Heat - Rockin' Art in Mott Park

Rockin' Art in Mott Park this past Saturday was a huge success! Starting at 8 in the morning neighbors started showing up to help set up the tents and it did not stop there. This year we had over 17 bands and 48 vendors. It was by far the largest Art in the Park that we have sponsored. We would like to recognize Sandy McKellar who made this event possible along with Tim Johnson, Pat Seals, J.C. and Laura Walker, Brian and Nena Woodall and the many others who committed their time and energy!

We were able to raise over $1,100.00 for the new playground which does not include the $150.00 we received from bottle donations!

Mott Park Running Club Wraps Up for the Summer

1o kids participated in the Crim Invitational on Friday night, an event they had worked towards all summer. Four of the participants entered the 3/4 mile competitive race while the other 6 ran the 1/2 mile fun run.

The Mott Park Crim Running Club met every Thursday from 6:45-7:45 throughout the summer and their dedication paid off. Thank you to everyone who made this a possibility! We could not have done it without you! We hope you can join us next year!

Mott Park neighborhood group joins Facebook to stay connected, share news about crime

FLINT, Michigan -- A Flint neighborhood is turning it's new Facebook page into a virtual crime watch.
Mott Park resident Susan Burhans created the page to post upcoming local events and reach out to younger residents.
But following a rash of neighborhood break-ins, the Facebook group has become more focused on crime.
"The problem you have (with traditional communication) is that you have two or three neighbors that know what happens and that's it," said Marta Wyngaard, president of the Mott Park Neighborhood Association. "Having that in Facebook is a tool to help solve problems."
The Facebook group has 34 members since its inception a month ago. The biggest discussion topic is crime, with residents posting suspect details, sightings of strangers in the neighborhood and details of recent break-ins.
Many also are posting tips for their neighbors.
"Please be aware and do not leave valuables ... in your vehicles overnight," writes one member, who tells about a neighbor's truck being broken into on Frank Street at the end of March.
Another neighbor writes on the forum about starting patrols.
"We do have to unite as a neighborhood & watch out for anything out of the ordinary," writes another neighbor.
Community sites like the Mott Park Facebook group can be a valuable tool, said Bob Campbell, spokesman for the city of Flint.
"Provided it's accurate and timely, it could be a benefit," he said. "To the extent of how it's helping to keep neighbors informed in their community, it's certainly a positive tool."
Burhans, 28, who has lived in the neighborhood for four years, said her goal in starting the page was to bring neighbors together and keep them connected.
"I believe it is important to stay informed about what's going on. It effects everyone," Burhans said.
Wyngaard said the Mott Park neighborhood used to be made up of mostly older residents, but has increasingly become part of a cultural hub for young people looking to live in an urban area.
Those people typically don't read newsletters the neighborhood association sends out, nor do they have time to attend meetings. Facebook is one way to reach them.
It appears that Mott Park is the only Flint neighborhood with a Facebook page. A search of Flint groups shows that while some area churches and schools have pages, other neighborhoods do not.
"Now as people are commuting and working more, the neighborly activities have started to come through Facebook," Wyngaard said. "It's surprising for us, but really neat."
